Artists’ book, unique state, featuring collage elements and pencil

Created especially for Milly Sleeping’s Loved & Lost Society, this artists’ book was exhibited as part of L’Oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival (LMFF) 2011’s Cultural Program, where for festival’s duration it was available for a leaf through at the Loved & Lost collection site at Since Grey (122 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy, Melbourne) and later at Milly Sleeping (157 Elgin Street, Carlton, Melbourne).

This artists’ book is now in the collection of the State Library Victoria.

Other projects with Milly Sleeping have included Hidden Gems & Rough Diamonds (2012), Nice Work (2012), Borrow (2009), and I Feel Fine (2009).

The Paper People

Obsessed with books, paper or stationery? Aren’t we all? But not all of us turn this obsession into a career path. Even fewer of us manage to create successful business or artistic practice on the back of a love for the printed matter. But they do exist. We’ve dug out a handful of the most attractive specimens.

hammer & daisy
An ill-equipped foray into a gardening business left bookbinders Gracia Haby and Louise Jennison with only a name, hammer & daisy. Choosing sore thumbs over green thumbs, the women abandoned the garden to produce a line of handmade, limited-edition artists' books, prints and zines, with a delicate collaboration of collage, drawing and painting complete with fantastical animals and childlike landscapes present in all their work. Having studied under Daniel E. Kelm at the Centro del bel Libro in Switzerland’s Ascona (that’s the Oxford of bookbinders), hammer & daisy keep traditional techniques modern. Their cute postcards, drawings, pin cushions and notebooks are available online.

The Design Guide is a practical manual for all those who want to explore a city’s creative aspects, whether they are newcomers or locals. It's a city guide and designer directory rolled into one, highlighting contemporary developments in the built environment, design, art and fashion and joining the dots between them to paint a colourful picture not only of the city itself but also the dynamics that are at play within it.
